United Parents for Education has always been about pushing a kids-first agenda in the San Diego Unified School District.

In the last week, that effort took on new life.

By spearheading the ‘Four the Kids,’ they launched a public campaign to take a seat at the teacher union bargaining table with four items: 1 – Support and Recognize Excellent Teachers; 2 – Best-fit Staffing Decisions; 3 – Supportive Instructional Environment; and 4 – No Substitute for a Quality Teacher.

The group of parents laid out their goals first in a highly-read opinion-editorial written by United Parents for Education Executive Director Lisa Berlanga on April 3 in the U-T San Diego (‘Parents: Teacher contracts should weigh student needs’) followed by a live interview on KUSI’s Good Morning San Diego and subsequent news stories after the Tuesday San Diego Unified School District board meeting.

Other stories followed by Education Week, EdSource and California Political News & Views, Around the Capitol with more to come.
